Day-by-day Description
Day 1Pick up from Tanga
Activities Included
Scenic Drive Wilderness Trail Bird WatchingYou will be picked up in Tanga town around midday and driven in a four-wheel drive vehicle to Camp Mawingu in the East Usambara Mountains, which will be the base/starting point for hiking in and around the Amani Nature Reserve. The scenic drive will take you through the tropical rainforest on small serpentine mountain roads and takes approximately three hours with several stops at beautiful viewpoints, including a picnic lunch by a waterfall. Once you arrive to Camp Mawingu there is time to relax and settle in, and to admire the spectacular sunset views over the Lwengera Valley and Masai Steppe with sundowners and dinner.

Day 2Hiking in and around the Amani Nature Reserve
Activities Included
Hiking Wilderness Trail Bird Watching CultureThe East Usambara Mountains and the Amani Nature Reserve are blessed with a multitude of hiking trails through the tropical rainforest, tea estates and small shambas (family-owned farms). Depending on the ambitions of the group members we will arrange a tailor-made hike for you led by a knowledgeable local guide. Lunch will be served at a scenic location during the hike, and dinner will be served back at the Mawingu Camp.
Day 3Hiking/opportunity to meet local community members
Activities Included
Wilderness Trail Bird Watching CultureDepending on your interests day three can either consist of hiking on new trails in a different part of the nature reserve, or a visit to one of the surrounding villages and joining community members in activities such as tea-picking, collecting honey, or a visit to the Kwamkoro Tea Factory. Dinner will be served back at the Mawingu Camp, and for those who are interested a night walk will be arranged to experience the nocturnal fauna of the rainforest.
Day 4Morning Hike and Return to Tanga
Activities Included
Scenic Drive Wilderness Trail Bird WatchingFor those who are interested there is an option to hike part of the journey through the reserve after breakfast and be picked up by the four-wheel drive about halfway down the mountain to continue to Tanga. A packed lunch will be served en-route and drop off in Tanga will be around 2pm.
