Summary

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro takes you through a world of landscapes, from the tropical rain forest on the lower slopes, alpine heath, almost-bare alpine desert and, finally, the wintry Arctic summit of snow and ice. The ascent up Kilimanjaro can be done from six routes, and Machame is one of the most popular ones. Accommodation on the route is in campsites throughout. While expert guides and porters will accompany you on your climb, no technical equipment is required on these routes. Despite its height, Kilimanjaro is one of the world’s most accessible high summits, with most climbers reaching the peak (Uhuru Peak) with little more than a walking stick, proper clothing and lots of determination!

Early after breakfast you will be picked up from your hotel and taken to Machame Gate, the entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park. While your guide completes your registration process, you can watch the mountain team prepare for the climb. Once these processes are complete, your Kilimanjaro adventure will begin! In no time you will be deep within the magnificent mountain rainforest with ancient trees, primeval ferns, liana, lichen and moss that carpets the ground and drapes over trees. With luck, you might spot the beautiful black-and-white colobus monkeys which inhabit the treetops. After 5 to 6 hours, you will reach today’s destination - Machame Camp - which is situated just above the tree line at 3010m. Here, at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro, you will have your first dinner followed by an overnight stay in tents.

As today's journey begins, the path steepens and the vegetation changes into moor- and heathland. The landscape opens up to allow spectacular views of the impressive mountain range. Today’s stage is shorter than the previous day, so you will arrive at the New Shira Camp by mid-afternoon. We will have dinner and stay overnight here. Today, you will need to climb about 800m, but you will be camping at an elevation only slightly higher than the previous night. This will allow your body to acclimatize to the altitude and ensure a successful climb to the summit. The trek begins with a long ascent above the Shira Plateau in the direction of the Lava Tower at 4640m. The vegetation becomes sparser as the landscape changes to an afro-alpine desert. The route passes through the sweeping Barranco Valley with its lobelia and giant senecio plants. After 6 to 7 hours, you will arrive at the most beautiful camp on the mountain – the Barranco Camp. We'll stop here for dinner and a welcome rest. Altitude: ↑ 795 m ↓ 680 m

Here you will see Kilimanjaro in all its glory, enjoying the 360° view over the landscape below as the sun rises. You are now standing on the “Roof of Africa”. The simple descent runs almost along the same route and shortly before midday you should arrive at Barafu Camp, where the porters and the cook will be waiting for you. After saying goodbye to your mountain crew, you will be met at the gate by our transfer driver and taken back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi.
