This tour welcomes you to enjoy the scenic natural features, exotic culture, and historical legacies of the largest region in Ghana. Meet local people and immerse yourself in their way of life. Undertake a walking- or driving-safari at the Mole National Park, and a river safari in a canoe at the Mognori Eco-Village. The tour may be undertaken in a group, a budget-friendly option for friends or family. The cost of the tour package is subject to change, as hotel rates and gasoline prices fluctuate regularly. However, the tour is also flexible enough to suit your personal budget and travel wishes. Your driver will meet you at your hotel after breakfast to take you to the airport, where a plane awaits to whisk you off to Tamale! Tamale is the capital city of the Northern Region, a fast-growing and bustling metropolis with a lively mixture of cultures. Stroll through the flamboyant central market, the neighbourhoods around the Central Mosque, and the township where leather goods are made. Travellers may also wish to visit the craft market, where one will find typical Ghanaian souvenirs such as leather goods, straw baskets, and handmade instruments. After an early lunch break in the city, you'll continue your journey to Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region. Along the way, pay a visit the village of Karimenga where you'll meet Ibrahim, a passionate inhabitant of the village and proud founder of The Green House. The Green House, a lodge built in the local architectural style, offers basic, comfortable accommodation and excellent service, including interesting excursions led by Ibrahim through his village. Visitors may undertake a herbal medicine tour, embark on a cycling trail, or go for a walk through the village. In addition, there are hiking trails of 2-3 hours through the savannah woodlands. Optionally, visit the village of Gowrie to see the beautiful lake and its surrounds, situated next to Karimenga. Another option is a visit the nearby Tongo, a small town known for its location in the extra-ordinary architecture and distinct landscape of the Tengzug Hills. The hills are home to unique granite rock formations, which whistle when the harmattan winds pass through. The Tengzug Shrine is one of the most famous shrines in the region, and was once a hideout for slaves evading their captors. Currently, it is used for traditional religious animal sacrifices. If you are interested in visiting the shrine and witnessing a chicken sacrifice, it is custom to disrobe completely from the waist upwards. No photography is permitted in and around the shrine. Finally, you'll arrive in Bolgatanga, the laid-back capital of the Upper-East Region. The town was founded in medieval times, and has served as an important gold route from the South to Timbuktu (in present-day Mali). Bolga is also the meeting point of the ancient trans-Saharan trade routes from Mali, which passed through Burkina Faso down to Tamale and southern Ghana. A second route, from northern Nigeria through Bawku, converges at Bolga and then joins the main route from the south. Visit the central market, if time permits; if not, you can always go in the morning before your departure to Wa. Check-in at your hotel for dinner and a well-earned rest.

After breakfast, tour some of the highlights in and around the town, such as the Sirigu Women Art and Pottery (SWAP) project. Catch a glimpse of the patterned houses of the Gurunsi tribe, which are traditionally painted by Gurunsi women. You may also wish to visit the cathedral known as Our Lady of Seven Sorrows in Navrongo, known for being the first large building in the region (established in the 1920s) and for its unique, mud-decorated interior. In addition, you could visit the relics of the Pikworo Slave Camp, a hidden northern slave market that fed the southern slave sales in the 19th century. You can also visit the fascinating Paga Pia’s palace, which is more than a hundred years old; here, you will also find the crocodile pond, which is a rewarding destination. Take a lunch break and continue your journey to the Upper-West capital Wa, one of the oldest towns in Ghana - it was founded in the 16th or 17th century. Once you've arrived in Wa, check into your hotel for dinner and a few hours of rest and relaxation.

After breakfast, take a leisurely stroll through the town. You'll still find some ancient buildings based on West Sudanese mud-stick architecture, like the Nakore mosque and the Chief’s palace. Another charming local experience is that of the busy weekly market, where agricultural goods are traded. Perhaps you'd like to stop and sample some freshly-brewed millet beer from a calabash. After an early lunch at a local restaurant, continue your journey to Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary, a unique community-based tourist and wildlife conservation project. Once in the Sanctuary, you'll be taken upriver in a canoe to spot some of the fifty-or-so hippos in their natural habitat. The community sanctuary has much to offer in terms of the local culture, architecture and activities. For instance, you could go bird-watching, or get a tour around a Lobi compound. The Lobi people migrated from Burkina Faso, and are known for their particular housing architecture. At the end of the day, return to your hotel in Wa for dinner and relaxation.

After breakfast, the tour continues to Mole National Park. Mole is one of the main attractions of the northern part of the country, and well-known for its elephant population. En route to the park, you can make a short stop at Bole to visit one of Ghana's remaining six mud mosques. You may also visit the Larabanga Mosque, or "The Mecca of West Africa" founded in 1421. It is said to be Ghana's oldest mosque, and possibly the longest-standing building in the country (predating European colonialism). This whitewashed, mud-built Sahelian mosque contains an ancient copy of the Qur'an. Once we've arrived in Mole National Park, we'll check in at your hotel for lunch. Afterwards, we'll go on an afternoon game drive or walking safari to enjoy the spoils of nature. Mole is said to be one of the few places on the African continent where you embark on a walking safari to observe elephants without the risk of being attacked by a more dangerous wildlife species, such as lions. At the end of the day, retire to your hotel for dinner and relaxation.

Spend the entire day at leisure in the park. Guests may choose between enjoying either a game drive or a walking safari in the morning. The walking safari takes place either early in the morning (usually leaving the lodge around 6AM, just as the sun is rising) or around 3PM. The walking safari covers a few kilometres over uneven, bushy terrain, so good, closed, walking shoes are a requirement. Another enjoyable activity is to spend some time watching the comings and goings of various animals at the waterhole, which is their primary drinking spot in the dry season. If you are lucky, you might spot one of the elusive crocodiles keeping a beady eye on the prey animals which drink and play in the waterhole. Alternatively, take the afternoon off from the animals and meet the friendly Gonja people of Mognori to learn about their distinctive culture. If desired, enjoy a canoe ride on the Mole River, which is highly recommended during the rainy season. Return to your hotel in the park for dinner, and finish your day off by relaxing at the pool.

Activities Included

After breakfast, visit a traditional Dagomba village, where people live in round thatched-roofed houses built in circular compounds, and where life is radically different from the South. It is a wonderful experience to learn about people with different religious backgrounds, who converted from pure animism to Christianity or Islam; all three denominations live peacefully alongside one another. Visitors may wish to pass through the village of Daboya, a weaving village where fugu (a garment worn by men in Northern Ghana) is made. The fugu is made from hand-spun white- and indigo-dyed cloth, and is worn as a smock. In addition, visit one of the villages around Tamale, where shea butter is manufactured. If time permits, our driver will inform you of other interesting activities to participate in. Enjoy lunch before being dropped off at the airport for your flight back to Accra. This marks the end of your tour with us. Proceed to International Departures for check-in and your flight home. Thank you for traveling with us, and bon voyage!
