Summary
We spend our first day exploring Kampala, Uganda’s colorful capital before we begin our journey West-wards, to explore Kibale and Semuliki National Parks. Kibale is famously known for Chimpanzee tracking in the whole world. The park is home to a total of 70 mammal species, most famously 13 species of primate including the chimpanzee. It also contains over375 bird species. While Semuliki is the only tract of true lowland savannah and tropical forest in East Africa, hosting 441 recorded bird species and 53 mammals and 4 distinct ethnic groups and these include; The Bwamba, Bakonjo, Batuku and Batwa pygmies originally hunter and fruit gatherers in the forest. The Kibale-Fort Portal and Semuliki area is one of Uganda’s most rewarding destinations to explore! Day 2Transfer to Kibale

Bird Photography Bird WatchingAfter breakfast we will depart Kampala and head west to Fort Portal. On your way look out for black and white colobus monkeys as many of these primates are hiding in trees along the road. Fort Portal rests in the shadow of the fabled Mountains of the Moon and is famous for the many tea plantations. From this lovely town we will continue to Kibale National Park for a stay within the tropical forest.

Day 3Day 3: Chimpanzee Tracking

Animal Tracking Game Walk Hiking Landscape photography Wilderness Trail Bird WatchingToday the forest opens its doors for sensational chimp tracking. Kibale Forest is reputable for having the greatest variety and highest concentration of primates in East Africa. Enjoy a guided nature walk in the tropical rainforest in search of the wild chimpanzee, red tailed monkey, black and white colobus monkey and many others. After lunch we transfer to Bigodi for a complete different walk. Here you will have the choice to join a guided Swamp Walk through the Wetland Sanctuary, which is famous for the many birds and primates that live in this area. Alternatively, you may decide to go for a Village Walk. Accompanied by a guide who can tell you everything about the traditional customs and lifestyle of the inhabitants, you will follow the village path and visit a primary school, Catholic Church, traditional homesteads, learn about the crops and listen to the story telling of the locals. Both activities are an initiative of the inhabitants of Bigodi Village and the revenues are shared by the local community.

Day 4Transfer to Semuliki

Evening Drives Game Walk Wilderness Trail Game drive Bird Watching CultureAfter Breakfast drive through Fort Portal and then proceed with Bundibugyo meandering Road for about 59km from Fort Portal to the UWA gate of Sempaya, and then proceed 6km to the park Headquarters at Ntandi. 4WD vehicles are much preferred for this circuit. Overnight and Dinner Semuliki Safari Lodge/Ntoroko Game Lodge (Up Market options) or UWA Bandas Budget.

Day 5Viewing of Hot springs and Nature walks

Evening Drives Game Walk Hiking Morning Drives Bird Watching CultureAfter breakfast take hour-long trail to the outer, “male” spring leads through a patch of forest where red-tailed monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys are common. A tree house en-route provides an aerial view. A 30-minute hike through palm forest from the main road leads to the inner, “female” spring, dominated by a boiling geyser. Eggs and Matooke (green plantain) can be cooked in these boiling waters and enjoyed by hungry hikers! In the afternoon go for nature walk or you may choose to relax. And for birders who make it to Semuliki will be rewarded with some of Africa’s best forest birding. Sempaya and Ntandi provide excellent viewing of the birds including the White-crested Hornbill, Red-billed Dwarf Hornbill, and Piping Hornbill, Yellow-throated Nectar, Great blue and Ross’s Turacos. The area around Kirumia River is another top birding spot. The shoebill stork is regularly seen at close quarters on Lake Albert and forest walks are good for tracking water birds. Go back to your lodge for Dinner and Relaxing.
