By your spare time you will stay with us for the very unique cultural tour, where you will experience traditional and customs of the local communities, Kondoa is among the oldest District, its set along the famous Road –Great North Road in Dodoma Region, Capital City of Tanzania. Kondoa Irangi contains one of the world’s finest collections of prehistoric rock paintings, with an estimated 1600 individual paintings at almost two hundred different sites, the most accessible of which are in the Irangi Hills north of Kondoa. The most recent date from just a century or two ago, but the oldest are estimated to be between 19,000 and 30,000 years old, ranking them among the world’s most ancient examples of human artistic expression. Kondoa Irangi has spectacular collection of images from over 150 shelters, many with high artistic value, display sequences that provide a unique testimony to the changing socio-economic base of the area from hunter-gather to agro-pastoralist societies, and the beliefs and ideas associated with them. Some of the shelters are still considered to have ritual associations with the peoples who live nearby. “Lake Eyasi” Tourists hardly know this wild, still nearly unexplored landscape, and you will be particularly impressed of it. Lake Eyasi is a mildly alkaline lake stretching for about 50 km (31 miles) to the southwest. To the northeast, as far as your eyes can see, the horizon is dominated by the impressive Crater Highlands, to the north the plains of the Serengeti. This area is inhabited by small groups of Bushmen – the Hadza and Watindiga. Who live in groups hunting with bow and arrows and gathering roots, tubers and wild fruits much as humankind lived in the Stone Age over 100 years ago, when the stronger Masai tribes moved into the Ngorongoro and Serengeti, the tribes made the area around Lake Eyasi their home. Another interesting tribe in the area is the Datoga. These are the last remaining tribes of Bushmen in East Africa. Since we are in contact with these natives since many years, they permit to accompany us and show us their daily life and hunting methods. This is a hot, dry land, around which live the Hadzabe people, often associated with the Khoisan languages in Southern Africa because of their click language. The Hadzabe are believed to have lived here for nearly 10,000 years and continue to follow hunting-and-gathering traditions. Also in the area are the Iraqw (Mbulu), a people of Cushitic origin who arrived about 2000 years ago, as well as the Datoga also Cushitic. The Hadzabe, a hunter-gatherer tribe, live close to the shores of Lake Eyasi, as do the Nilotic-speaking Datoga tribe who are pastoralists. Visits to these tribes are possible on half day or full day excursions which would include a visit to their homesteads, learning about their way of life, medicinal plants, and even animal tracking with bows and arrows with the Hadzabe hunters. OLDUPAI GORGE: The Olduvai Gorge, popularly referred to as “The Cradle of Humankind”, is the site where in 1959 Dr. Louis Leakey discovered the skull of Zinjanthropus or “Nutcracker Man” believed to have lived 1.75 million years ago. Later reclassified as Australopithecus boisei, this creature had a massive skull though small brained (500 cc) with huge teeth. Several months later Dr. Leakey found another fossil hominid in the same layer of excavation, called Homo habilis or “handy man”, smaller than the “Nutcracker Man” but with a larger brain (600 cc) and capable of making simple stone tools.

The district of Kondoa, especially around the tiny village of Kolo, lies at the centre of one of the most impressive collections of ancient rock art on the African continent. There are approximately 1,500 rocks painting sites and found primarily in granite and gneiss rockshelters. The majority of these sites have rock paintings, with only two exceptions having been reported: rock engraving sites to the west of Kondoa at Usandawe. Common painted motifs are animals, human, and various geometric designs. These rock painting sites do not only contain rock paintings but also have a rich archaeological record dating from the Middle Stone Age (MSA) right up to the Iron Age (Masao 1979; Kessy 2005). Some of the rockshelters, notably theMongomi wa Kolo shelter and its surrounding environments, are also connected to living heritage. This site and its landscape have been used by local people, the Warangi and Waasi, for traditional ritual ceremonies (Leakey 1983; Chalcraff 2005; Bwasiri 2011). Mary Leakey began documenting these rock paintings in the 1950s and when she was done, the conclusion are that these were the second most extensive rock painting sites in Africa next to Tassili N’Ajjer in Algeria. There is now a small museum in Kolo right at the only junction in town. It has a couple of rooms with some stone tools and artifacts and pictures of some of the the rock paintings.

After the breakfast it’s time to say goodbye to our local villagers and continue with this amazing historical and cultural tour. His findings in Olduvai contained hundreds of fossils, bones and ancient artefacts and the gorge has, since then, become one of the world’s most important prehistoric sites. Olduvai Gorge helped answer many important questions about the human evolution and people travel from afar to go and see this historic part of Tanzania. Millions of years ago the Olduvai Gorge was actually a large lake with shores covered in volcanic ash. After seismic activity the water in Olduvai began to clear revealing the hidden treasures of history. Each physical layer of this Tanzania Gorge seems to open up new findings, different historic periods and, of course, unknown possibilities! Some historic tools discovered in Olduvai Gorge were named Oldowan and they are believed to be over 2.6 million years old.
