What should I wear in Zanzibar?

If the fact that summer is coming to an end makes you want to go into hibernation mode then maybe you need to look at taking a vacation. Instead of the typical ‘winter vacation at grandma’s’, look further south and consider visiting Zanzibar, one of the many beautiful destinations in Tanzania, where you can experience an endless summer. Go horse riding, go to the beach, explore Stone Town or experience a mind-blowing safari in Tanzania that even your grandma will enjoy. So put those ugly sweaters away and bring out more loose fitting clothes in lighter fabrics like linen, silk, bamboo and cotton. Here are some tips on what you should wear if you’re planning a Zanzibar getaway.

1. SWIM WEAR It’s safe to say you’re going to spend a lot of time in the crystal clear water surrounding the island of Zanzibar. With some of the most beautiful beaches in East Africa just a stone throw away, there’s no doubt you won’t be able to resist. If you’re feeling daring you can even go diving – Zanzibar is home to some of the best diving sites in Africa. Of course, with all the beauty surrounding you, you’re going to want to take a lot of instagram pictures and for that I would recommend you bring a few different items of swim wear so that you can mix and match and make every picture unique. Also remember to carry a sarong to throw over your bikini as well as clothes to cover up after you leave the beach seeing as Tanzania is still a conservative country and has a strong muslim community.

2. SNEAKERS AND TRAINERS There’s lots of exploring to do in all destinations in Tanzania and you’re most definitely going to want to wear comfortable shoes to take full advantage of them! Whether it’s a Spice Tour or visiting Prisoners Island, there’s lots of walking to be done. There’s no way you’re going to survive exploring the streets of the capital’s old quarter Stone Town (a World Heritage Site buzzing with colorful back-street markets and local flavours) in 6-inch heels. For your own good, bring your sneakers.

3. LOOSE FITTING CLOTHES Tanzania can get hot – like, really hot! Beat the heat by making sure you carry lots of comfortable summer clothes like airy dresses as well as long skirts to keep cool but also respect the culture of the locals. Although the tourist areas are more accommodating in terms of allowing you to wear more revealing clothes, the locals in smaller towns and villages will appreciate the more you cover up. Although, even in winter the heat can be intense so don’t make the mistake of packing like you’re going to the north pole. As long as you carry loose fitting clothes and pack long sleeve shirts and long pants for the evening, you should be safe. But even if you’re covering up, please make sure you use insect repellent!

4. A SMILE Now, this one is going to be easy! Come to Zanzibar with an open mind it is sure to give you a once in a lifetime adventure. Here you will get the unique experience of an East African country with Swahili and Islamic Influences. The locals are friendly and a smile goes a long way. Respect their culture by not wearing too tight or revealing clothes and they will be more than happy to have you around. Now that you know what to wear in Zanzibar, get packing and book a safari in Tanzania.
