Join me and experience the largest mammal migration on the planet on an 8 day expedition! Kasanka offers visitors the opportunity to experience a Southern African adventure with tropical elements in a remote and unspoiled wilderness that is unlike any other. With a rich diversity of animal, bird and plant life including several rare species such as sitatunga, wattled crane, Ross’s Lourie and Blue Monkeys. Kasanka is also host to the unique and spectacular congregation of several million Straw-Colored Fruit bats – the reason for this adventure! On this 8 day expedition-style safari we will both be camping and using lodged accommodation. This safari is not just for bat nerds, it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all animal lovers and adventure seekers willing to go off-the-beaten path to make unforgettable memories.

Day 1Meet in Lusaka

CultureArrive Lusaka International Airport and transfer to your accommodation for the night. Once you have all arrived Pierre will meet you at the guest house over dinner and go over the following days itinerary.
Day 2Travel to Kasanka

Game drive CultureDeparting Lusaka early we head Northeast for the Maluashi Gate of Kasanka National Park. Our first nights’ meal will be a traditional Bemba dinner prepared by the lodge staff at Wasa Lodge and we will be accommodated in their lodge chalets. Local staff come from the BaBemba community. Set on the banks of a large lagoon it offers fantastic viewing of Puku, Hippo and other species as well as being close to the Mushitu (swamp forest). Relax and get a good nights' sleep.

Day 3Bats and Sitatunga

Wilderness Trail Bird Watching CultureOur first morning will be spent having breakfast, relaxing in front of the lodge in the forest taking in the millions of bats as well as a host of other bird species. Sunrise & sunset are the best times to view the bats as they take flight in the evenings or return to roost in the mornings after feeding. There is a Bat Hide set at tree top height giving you the best view. We will move deeper into the park to a campsite situated in an evergreen forest overlooking a swamp clearing favored by Sitatunga, it is close to the Bat hide and Fibwe hide. We will spend 2 nights here with local guides taking us on specialized excursions looking for bats, birds & mammals. Today, we will be joined by local guides from the indigenous BaBemba community who help to operate the park in a private-public partnership.

Day 5Bats, Birds and More

Animal Tracking Wildlife Photography Bird Watching CultureWe continue with game drives and bushwalks and explore the widllife. Kasanka has some of the finest birding in Africa’ according to Dr Ian Sinclair, one of Africa’s leading ornithologists. With over 330 species recorded. Kasanka is blessed with a wide variety of habitats, each hosting its own community of bird species, many of which are rare or uncommon.
Day 6Bufumu

Wilderness Trail Wildlife Photography Bird Watching CultureToday we will do some exploring of Kasanka National Park as we make our way towards the North West section of the park and the “Tall Tree”. This is a remote area of the park and supports impressive diversities of wildlife. A 14-meter-tall canopy tower overlooks the Mateshe offering impressive views & excellent birding. With 2 nights here there is time to relax, enjoy the scenery, do some walking with one of the guides and enjoy the solitude of the African bush.
Day 7More Wildlife

Bird WatchingWe will spend our second day here in Bufumu in the north west section of the park. Birding here is at or below eye-level. With a maximum capacity of 8 guests, we will probably have this intimate campsite all to ourselves.

Day 8Head back to Lusanka
Activities Included
CultureWith a sad heart and an early start we game drive back to the Maluashi gate & begin our return journey to Lusaka. We will refuel in Mposhi and continue South West towards our final destination of this tour. Few people ever witness this spectacular migration and you will be taking some fond memories and incredible photographs back home with you. If you would like to visit the Lilayi Elephant Facility (part of Game Rangers International) and see the work this organization is doing for rescued baby elephants please let us know and we will budget for it. It is well worth it!
