Day 1Mandara Hut

Activities Included

Game Walk Hiking

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut Take a short drive from Moshi town to the Kilimanjaro Park Gate (1,830 m.) lies at the edge of Marangu, which is an attractive village with many small coffee and banana plantations. After completing the entrance formalities, climb up through the attractive and unspoiled forest to reach the clearing containing Mandara Hut (2,700 m.). The volcanic remains of Maundi Crater are nearby and make a good afternoon excursion. An alternative is to rest and enjoy the beautiful forest. There is a rich birdlife at the huts and monkeys are often seen as well. [3-5 hours walking to Mandara Hut] Distance covered: 8.3km / 5.2m Approx. time took: 5 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Day 2Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Activities Included

Game Walk Hiking

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut The first part of the walk is a steep ascent through forest, but the path soon opens out into grassy moorland and, in clear weather, there are good views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. Climb steadily through the moorland zone, containing giant heather and occasional stands of groundsel, to eventually reach Horombo Hut (3,720 m.). Sunrises and sunsets here are often very stunning, the site is close to the glaciated dome of Kibo, and there is a real sense of being above the clouds. [4-6 hours walking from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut] Distance covered: 12.5km / 7.8m Approx. time took: 9 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

The terrain changes to screed and there is a palpable sense of high altitude wilderness. Usually, reach Kibo Hut (4,700 m.) at the bottom of the crater wall by midday and the afternoon is free (to contemplate the summit ascent). The remainder of the day is spent resting and eating in preparation for the final climb before a very early night! [4-5 hours walking from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut] Distance covered: 9.5km / 5.9mi Approx. time took: 7 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Day 4 Uhuru Peak

Activities Included

Game Walk Hiking

Uhuru Peak This is a long and demanding day! The guides wake you soon after midnight and you start out in the darkness, zigzagging up a long scree slope by the light of your torch in the extreme cold. At this time of day, the screen is still frozen – which makes it easier to walk on! After roughly two hours you should reach Hans Meyer’s Cave – named after the German geologist who made the first successful ascent in 1889 – where he found the remains of a frozen leopard. The gradient gets steeper and three hours on (this is the hardest stretch of the climb! you should reach the crater rim at Johanne’s Notch. From here it’s a short scramble to Gillman’s Point (5,685m) in time for dawn. Your reward is the dramatic spectacle of the sun rising over the ice fields and craggy peaks of Mawenzi – the profusion of colors and shapes make all the suffering seem worthwhile! For those who still have the energy and drive, it takes another couple of hours along the crater rim to reach Uhuru (Freedom) Peak (5,896m). Your descent (approx. 3 hours) retraces the route back down past Kibo Hut to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved rest. Overnight stay at Horombo Hut for 1 night (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner)
